More scope for towing
For trailers over 750 kg where the combined maximum authorised mass of the car and trailer exceeds 3.5 t but is no more than 4.25 t. B96 must be added to your licence after successful training.
Whether you tow a caravan, horse trailer or transport trailer, learn to drive safely with a car and trailer at our school in Winnenden.
For category BE, we practise safe coupling and uncoupling, correct vehicle checks and basic driving exercises, particularly reversing around a left-hand bend.
BE training includes five special driving lessons required by law. B96 is a driver training course without a separate practical driving licence test.
Category B already allows you to tow many trailers. Whether you need B96 or BE depends on the maximum authorised masses. We explain the differences below ↓
AI-editedWhat matters is the maximum authorised mass of the vehicle and trailer, not just their actual weight.
For trailers over 750 kg where the combined maximum authorised mass of the car and trailer exceeds 3.5 t but is no more than 4.25 t. B96 must be added to your licence after successful training.
A category B car with a trailer of up to 3.5 t maximum authorised mass. A practical test and the required special driving lessons apply.
The towing vehicle, trailer and combination must also be technically suitable.
Understand the differences between B, B96 and BE.
With a category B towing vehicle, you may tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of up to 750 kg. This can allow a combined total of up to 4,250 kg.
If the trailer exceeds 750 kg, the combined maximum authorised masses of the car and trailer must not exceed 3,500 kg with category B. The maximum authorised mass is stated in the vehicle documents. Towing capacity, nose weight and other technical limits always apply as well.
B96: The trailer has a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg. The car and trailer together exceed 3,500 kg but are no more than 4,250 kg.
BE: You drive a category B towing vehicle with a trailer of up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass. Your vehicle documents specify which combination your car is actually permitted to tow.
B96 consists of at least seven hours: 2.5 hours of theory, 3.5 hours of practical exercises and at least one hour of driving on public roads per participant. Each hour is 60 minutes.
No additional theory or practical test is required. You receive a certificate after successfully completing the training. Code 96 must be entered on your licence before you drive a combination that requires B96.
Upgrading from B to BE requires five special driving lessons: three on rural roads, one on the motorway and one at dusk or after dark. Each lasts 45 minutes.
The number of regular practice lessons, such as coupling, uncoupling and reversing, depends on your progress. Training ends with a practical test. No additional theory test is required.
