From 125 cc to unrestricted category A: find the key differences and requirements here.
Motorcycles up to 125 cc and no more than 11 kW. The power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.1 kW/kg.
Motorcycles up to 35 kW and no more than 0.2 kW/kg. A restricted motorcycle must not originally have had more than 70 kW.
Motorcycles without the category A2 power limit. Direct access or an upgrade after at least two years with A2 is possible.
Category A training and test from age 21. Ride category A2 motorcycles until your 24th birthday, then unrestricted category A motorcycles without another upgrade test.
From age 25, with at least five years of category B: ride 125 cc motorcycles up to 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg. Training and a licence endorsement are required, but no additional test.
After holding your current category for at least two years, you can upgrade by taking a practical test. We tailor your preparation to your riding experience.
These age limits apply to standard training routes; different upgrade rules may apply if you already hold other categories.
First licence, additional category or upgrade: find your route here.
A1 to A2: After at least two years with A1, you can obtain A2 by passing a practical upgrade test, from age 18 at the earliest.
A2 to A: After at least two years with A2, you can move to unrestricted category A by passing a practical upgrade test, from age 20 at the earliest.
The upgrade does not happen automatically. You apply to the driving licence authority and take the practical test. No new theory test is required for this progressive upgrade.
When upgrading after at least two years with A1 or A2, there are no required theory lessons and no fixed number of mandatory driving or special driving lessons. The practical preparation you need depends on your riding experience. We take you to the test when you can handle the motorcycle safely.
With a progressive upgrade, you move from A1 to A2 or A2 to A through a practical test. With A80, you obtain category A with code 80 from age 21 at the earliest. Until 24, you may ride motorcycles within category A2. From your 24th birthday, this restriction ends without another upgrade test.
A1 allows up to 125 cc, no more than 11 kW and a maximum of 0.1 kW per kilogram of vehicle weight. A2 allows no more than 35 kW and 0.2 kW/kg. A motorcycle restricted for A2 must not be derived from a model with more than 70 kW. We help you interpret the figures in the vehicle documents.
You must be at least 25 and have held category B for at least five years. Training comprises at least four theory sessions and five practical sessions, each lasting 90 minutes. You must demonstrate the required skills confidently; completing the minimum number of sessions does not guarantee successful completion.
After successfully completing the training, you receive a certificate. Code 196 must be entered on your driving licence before your first ride. The endorsement must be made within one year of completing the training. There is no additional driving licence test. B196 is valid only in Germany.
For your first licence, you need the full general theory course and additional motorcycle theory. If you already hold a driving licence, the general theory requirement is usually reduced. A progressive upgrade after two years and B196 are separate routes. We check your existing licence to find the right option for you.
